A normal pregnancy can be confirmed only after undergoing a medical test. But if you have been trying for a baby for sometime or have been undergoing treatment for infertility, keeping a close eye over the signs and symptoms of pregnancy will help you in taking necessary measures. Here are few of the major symptoms that you should keep a close eye on:

  • Missed period: This is the most important and most noticeable sign of pregnancy. This sign is completely reliable if your menstrual cycle is regular. If you do not get your periods for 40-45 days, buy a home pregnancy test kit and confirm the good news.

  • Cramps and spotting: In a normal pregnancy, when an egg fuses with a sperm and an embryo is formed it attaches to the wall of the uterus. This can cause mild cramps and spotting. But since this happens around 6-12 days after the egg is fertilized, most women mistake that for menstrual cramps. Some women even experience a milky white discharge which happens as a result of thickening of vaginal wall.

  • Breast changes: As soon as a woman conceives, there is a sudden change in her hormone levels. This hormonal change results in tenderness of the breasts and darkening of the areola. Some experience soreness and heaviness in the breasts. All these are signs that the woman might be pregnant.

  • Fatigue: Change in level of progesterone can cause fatigue in early pregnancy. Some may feel like they are drained. Some may experience this symptom even during the second half of the menstrual cycle. Hence there is a chance that it might get misinterpreted.

  • Frequent urination: This normally occurs during 6th to 8th week of pregnancy by which time you would have come to know of the good news. But for those of whom the periods are irregular this can be an early sign. Frequent urination happens as a result of hormonal change.

  • Dizziness and fainting: This again occurs as a result of hormonal change, change in blood pressure levels and low sugar levels.

  • Sensitivity to smell: Some women develop an aversion towards smell that was pleasing for them sometime back. Some may develop an affinity towards certain smell. This occurs as a result of rising hormone levels.

  • Nausea and vomiting: Most women experience these symptoms towards the 7th-8th week of pregnancy. This is also caused as a result of rise in hormone levels. For some this happens early in the morning and is called morning sickness. Some may experience it throughout the day or when they come across certain type of smell. The good news is that for majority of women this condition stops once they complete the first trimester.

The signs and symptoms of pregnancy varies from women to women and from pregnancy to pregnancy. If any of these symptoms become unbearable, do not hesitate to consult an Obstetrician. She may be able to help  you with proper medication.
